Glossary in plain English

The terms you’ll meet on betting sites and in HGC announcements, without the marketing language. Each with its Greek equivalent.

A

Accumulator (παρολί)(acca)
A bet slip with two or more selections that must all win. The odds multiply, and so does the margin of each market.
See also:Singles, accumulators, systems

B

Bet slip (δελτίο)
The list of your selections and your stake, before and after you place it.
Blacklist (μαύρη λίστα)(list of unlicensed operators)
The HGC’s list of websites that offer unlicensed gambling in Greece. Internet providers block access to them. It does not necessarily include every illegal website.

C

Cash-out (cash-out)
The option to settle a bet before the matches finish, for an amount set by the operator. The offer includes a margin again.
See also:Cash-out

D

Deposit limit (όριο κατάθεσης)
The most you can deposit or lose in a period. You set it in your account before you start.
See also:Limits and self-exclusion

H

HGC (ΕΕΕΠ)(Hellenic Gaming Commission)
The Hellenic Gaming Commission, the gambling regulator in Greece. It issues the licences and keeps the register of licence holders and the list of unlicensed operators (blacklist).

I

Implied probability (τεκμαρτή πιθανότητα)
The probability that matches a price: 1 ÷ odds. 1.85 corresponds to 54.1%. It is the operator’s price, not the real probability.
See also:Odds
In-play betting (live στοίχημα)(live betting)
Betting on a match that is already under way. Odds change constantly and decisions are made quickly: set a limit before you start.

M

Margin (περιθώριο)(overround)
The share of every stake the operator keeps over time. You see it when the implied probabilities of one market add up to more than 100%.
See also:The operator’s margin
Market (αγορά)
One question about a match with all its possible outcomes, e.g. "Full-time result: 1, X, 2" or "Over/Under 2.5 goals".

O

Odds (αποδόσεις)(decimal odds)
The number that shows how much is returned for every €1 staked, including the stake, if the outcome happens. In Greece odds are usually shown in decimal form (e.g. 1.85).

R

Register of licence holders (μητρώο κατόχων άδειας)(white list)
The HGC’s public list of companies holding an online licence: company, licence code, type, website and expiry. Being on the list is sufficient proof that a licence exists.

S

Self-exclusion (αυτοαποκλεισμός)
A request by the player to be excluded from gambling for a set or indefinite period. It is made to each operator separately; for all of them at once, through the HGC (info@hgc.gov.gr, with a declaration signed through gov.gr).
See also:Limits and self-exclusion
Single (μονό)
A bet on one outcome only. It wins if that outcome happens.
See also:Singles, accumulators, systems
System bet (σύστημα)
A slip that plays many combinations of your selections (e.g. every double from three matches). Each combination is a separate line you pay for.

T

Type 1 licence (άδεια Τύπου 1)
The HGC licence for online betting. Law 4002/2011 provides two online licence types: Type 1 for betting and Type 2 for other online games, each valid for 7 years. This guide covers betting only.

W

Wagering requirement (rollover)(rollover)
An offer condition that sets how many times you must bet an amount before you can withdraw it.
