Our methodology

What we publish

Bets GR shows only operators with an active online betting licence (Type 1) from the Hellenic Gaming Commission (HGC). We do not accept bets and we do not rank operators: our lists are alphabetical. We never promote casino games or slots.

We take no payment from operators until we are registered in the HGC register of affiliates.

Our sources

  • Register of licence holders (certifications.gamingcommission.gov.gr): we read every page of it each night. We check that the number of rows equals the total the register itself states; otherwise we keep the last good data. We keep only licences of type “Betting (Type 1)”: company, licence code, website, country, expiry date and whether the licence is valid.
  • Blacklist (hgc.gov.gr): every week we check which edition the HGC announces and download its file. Every answer shows the edition and the date of its decision.
  • Rules: Law 4002/2011, the Commercial Communication Regulation (Ministerial Decision 79292/2020) and the HGC’s decisions and directives, as the HGC publishes them. Every source is on our Sources page with the date we checked it.

Data rules

  1. Every fact has a source link and a checked date.
  2. Anything not verified is shown as “[TO BE VERIFIED]” and never as a value. The site build fails if a published fact has no source or date.
  3. The register publishes only each licence’s expiry date. Once that date passes with no new one, or the register marks the licence as not valid, the operator is hidden from every list, page and advertisement automatically. With fewer than 90 days left, we show “Expires in N days”.
  4. If a register date is clearly wrong (e.g. the year 3030), we show it as published with a “[TO BE VERIFIED]” note and do not correct it ourselves.

How the address check works

  1. We clean the address: we remove https, www, the path, the port and any trailing dot, and convert it to lower case and punycode.
  2. Licensed: an exact match with the website of an operator with an active betting licence.
  3. Licensed, expiring soon: the same, with fewer than 90 days left.
  4. On the blacklist: the domain or any of its parent domains is on the list.
  5. Not licensed: found nowhere. That does not make it safe, and a .gr ending proves nothing on its own.

How we read the HGC’s websites

We send at most one request per second, with a User-Agent that identifies us, keep a copy of the answers and send conditional requests, so a file that has not changed is not downloaded again. We never get around access restrictions: if the HGC refuses a request, we stop and do not retry.

Betting shops

There is no official, open list of betting shops from the HGC or any other public body. That is why we do not publish a list of betting shops.
